Overview
- Cypherpunk Technologies has initiated what it claims is the largest Zcash mining fleet globally through a $33.33 million equity deal with Winklevoss Capital.
- This transition marks the company's shift from merely accumulating ZEC to actively producing it, making it the largest corporate holder with approximately 323,394 coins (1.92% of total supply).
- The launch concludes a tumultuous period for the Winklevoss-supported Zcash investment.
Cypherpunk Technologies, a privacy-focused firm backed by the Winklevoss twins, has established what it asserts is the world's largest Zcash mining operation. This move expands its strategy from accumulating the privacy coin Zcash to actively producing it.
On Monday, the Nasdaq-listed company announced the launch of Cypherpunk Mining, which was made possible by a $33.33 million equity deal with Winklevoss Capital, enabling the acquisition of state-of-the-art Z15 Pro mining machines along with their hosting agreements.
The U.S.-based mining fleet is currently operational and boasts a hashrate of approximately 4.2 GSol/s on the Equihash algorithm, which accounts for an estimated 18% of the Zcash network's total hashrate. This acquisition was financed through a pre-funded warrant for about 43.3 million shares of Cypherpunk, with a stock price valuation of $0.77.
The Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, highlighted that this acquisition offers public investors a rare opportunity to enter Zcash mining, which has previously been difficult to access. Chief Investment Officer Will McEvoy emphasized that mining is a critical aspect of the firm's privacy-centric strategy, stating that the ZEC mined will support further growth, additional coin acquisitions, and investments in new privacy technologies.
Cameron Winklevoss remarked on X, "Zcash hashrate has been concentrated in a small number of miners, pools, and ASIC manufacturers—almost entirely outside the U.S. Cypherpunk is changing that. Our fleet is deployed across U.S. facilities, owned outright, with zero debt and locked-in low power costs."

This mining initiative directly supports Cypherpunk's treasury goals. The firm is already the largest corporate holder of ZEC, possessing about 323,394 coins, equating to approximately 1.92% of the circulating supply, with aspirations to reach 5% ownership.
With around 43,800 ZEC generated for miners each month, the company believes that its mining efforts will accelerate its goal while maintaining production costs below market price. Additionally, Cypherpunk has recruited Kevin Zhang, a former Foundry executive, to lead its mining operations.
This launch caps a volatile chapter for the company’s Zcash investment. Cypherpunk's treasury initiative was established with Winklevoss support and initially benefited from a significant ZEC price increase, even as Bitcoin declined towards the end of 2025. Notably, Zcash's creator, Zooko Wilcox, joined the project at the end of last year.
However, the journey has not been without challenges: the company's stock saw a nearly 40% decline following a Zcash privacy issue, highlighting the risks tied to a single, thinly traded asset. Currently, Zcash is trading slightly above $500, reflecting a 7% increase over the past week, yet it is down around 28% from its peak of nearly $700 last year.
Cypherpunk acknowledges that its share price is likely to remain closely tied to ZEC, presenting a risk that could affect them in both directions.
