  • On August 9, an attacker extracted $8.07 million from Coinsbuy via TRON and Ethereum in less than an hour, with blockchain experts connecting both chains through cross-chain swapper Bridgers.
  • Approximately 79% of the stolen assets were funneled through the instant exchange FixedFloat using 50 unique addresses. ChangeNOW has frozen part of the funds after being alerted by Specter Investigations, while around $542,000 in ETH remains untouched.
  • Coinsbuy replenished the compromised wallets within a day, indicating that private keys were likely not breached, but the exchange has not clarified how the withdrawals were executed.

Coinsbuy, a cryptocurrency exchange, faced a loss exceeding $8 million due to a coordinated attack that targeted both TRON and Ethereum on August 9, as revealed by blockchain data analyzed by security specialists.

The assault commenced with a transaction of 5 USDT, leading to the rapid depletion of eight TRON wallets totaling 6.04 million of the stablecoin within about an hour. Concurrently, three wallets on Ethereum lost 1.89 million USDT and 77 ETH, which was converted to ETH via 1inch through a wallet established on the same day.

Onchain analysis has established that the two blockchains were interlinked through the cross-chain swapper Bridgers, which funneled funds directly into the Ethereum swap wallet, thereby merging what seemed like separate operations into a unified event.

The attacker channeled roughly 79% of the pilfered funds through FixedFloat, employing about 50 single-use addresses. ChangeNOW also froze a portion of the funds after being contacted by Specter Investigations.

Approximately 282 ETH, valued at around $542,000, still sits across five addresses without any movement.

Within a day, Coinsbuy managed to restore the drained wallets to nearly 99.95% of their pre-incident levels, a move that analysts suggest indicates a belief that their private keys were not compromised. The method of attack, however, remains unverified. Coinsbuy has not released any public statements regarding the incident.

This event contributes to a challenging year for the cryptocurrency sector, which has already reported about $972 million in thefts by late July.

CoinDesk has reached out to Coinsbuy for further comments.
