Coinbase is shifting its image in Canada, urging potential users to view it as more than just a cryptocurrency exchange but rather as the all-inclusive financial app that the nation requires.
In a recent discussion with BNN Bloomberg, Eric Richmond shared that the firm is advancing its "Everything Exchange" initiative into Canada. This platform will allow users to trade crypto, stocks, ETFs (which track a collection of assets like the S&P 500), and prediction markets (where real money is wagered on the outcomes of events such as elections or sports) all from a single account.
Richmond stated, "The initial phase of Coinbase in Canada focused on being a crypto exchange. Now, we are entering the second phase with the Everything Exchange. Our goal is to establish a single destination for Canadians to manage their entire financial journey through one application, enabled by technology that ensures a seamless, frictionless experience available 24/7."
While no firm launch date for the Canadian market has been confirmed, Coinbase is actively engaging with local regulatory bodies to facilitate this expansion. This relationship has been strengthened since the company registered as the first international cryptocurrency exchange in Canada in April 2024.
In the United States, Coinbase has already made significant strides by allowing eligible users to trade stocks and ETFs starting in February 2026, and it launched prediction markets in January in partnership with Kalshi, a regulated prediction market operator currently valued at $22 billion. As reported by Decrypt in June, the roadmap for the Everything Exchange now encompasses nearly 10,000 stocks and ETFs within a single platform.
According to a previous official blog, tokenized stocks—shares of actual companies recorded on a blockchain, allowing for immediate settlement and continuous trading—are set to be introduced to non-U.S. customers this month. Richmond emphasized that this move is about enhancing accessibility.
Regarding competition from Robinhood and other traditional Canadian brokerages, Richmond expressed confidence, stating, "People are beginning to understand that banks and markets close at 4 p.m., and that wire transfers can take days to settle, or that access to certain products is often reserved for high-net-worth individuals."
He summarized his perspective in five words: "A rising tide lifts all boats."
The Bank of Canada is anticipated to finalize regulations for stablecoin implementation by 2027, which is the final regulatory requirement Coinbase needs before it can launch a Canadian dollar stablecoin and fully implement the Everything Exchange in the country.
