Coinbase is calling on Bitcoin developers to initiate preparations against potential quantum computing threats, emphasizing that the transition to quantum-resistant cryptography is a lengthy process that must begin now. The exchange, which claims to hold about 5% of the total Bitcoin supply, issued this warning in a blog post, highlighting that changes to Bitcoin's consensus mechanisms and ecosystem could take years to implement.
In its post, Coinbase stressed the urgency of addressing quantum computing risks, which could theoretically allow a sufficiently advanced quantum computer to derive private keys from public keys, potentially draining Bitcoin wallets. This scenario, referred to as "Q-Day," underscores the necessity of proactive measures rather than waiting for definitive evidence of quantum threats.
To enhance Bitcoin’s security, Coinbase proposed several technical requirements, including a flexible design akin to BIP-360, which would allow for gradual integration of new post-quantum signature systems. Furthermore, it suggested a dual spending path utilizing both classical and quantum-safe keys to facilitate a smoother transition.
