Summary
- Coinbase issued an AI-generated notification that inaccurately stated the result of a World Cup match before it had begun.
- The company has since corrected the error and improved its systems to mitigate such occurrences.
- This incident coincides with Coinbase's recent integration of AI features and prediction markets.
Over the weekend, Coinbase's AI news system faced criticism after it mistakenly alerted users about a World Cup match outcome ahead of kickoff.
The erroneous notification, dispatched on Sunday, claimed that Norway had triumphed over Brazil 3-2 in a knockout match at MetLife Stadium, attributing two goals to Erling Haaland. However, the match was yet to commence, and Coinbase's prediction market page indicated that the game was delayed.
Screenshots of the notification spread on X, leading Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong to investigate the situation. Later, Max Branzburg, the head of consumer and business products at Coinbase, announced that the company had rectified the mistake and made necessary updates to its systems.
“We fixed the incorrect story and made some updates to avoid these types of inaccuracies in the future,” wrote Branzburg on X. “It’s impressive to see the capabilities of AI-enabled 24/7 insights for trading, but we clearly need to fine-tune it to prevent these issues.”

It’s awesome to see the power of AI-enabled 24/7 insights for trading, but obviously still need to tune it to address these types of issues
And hey - it turns out Norway did…

Although the final score differed from the alert, Norway eventually defeated Brazil 2-1 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with Haaland netting two goals in the second half.
“And hey—it turns out Norway did win and Haaland did score 2 goals, so maybe the AI knew something we didn’t!” Branzburg remarked.
Coinbase chose not to provide further comments, instead directing inquiries to Branzburg’s statement on X.
This blunder occurs as Coinbase broadens its offerings beyond cryptocurrency trading, incorporating AI-driven tools and prediction markets as part of its strategy to diversify its platform. In January, Coinbase launched prediction markets via Kalshi, enabling users to trade contracts related to sports, elections, economic indicators, and other real-world events.
Additionally, Coinbase has intensified its focus on AI agents, introducing tools aimed at automating aspects of the cryptocurrency experience, which include AI-powered wallets and agents that autonomously engage with blockchain applications.
