Market Decline Driven by AI Skepticism

China's stock market has experienced a staggering loss of approximately $2.4 trillion in market capitalization since May, driven by investor concerns regarding the profitability of the government's AI initiatives. This decline surpasses the annual economic output of South Korea.

Recent data from Goldman Sachs reveals that AI companies constitute 42% of the market value of Chinese stocks, while accounting for 57% of trading activity. The significant downturn in AI stocks has consequently impacted the broader market.

CSI 300 Enters Bear Market

The CSI 300 index, which tracks the largest 300 companies listed in China, officially entered bear market territory on October 22, reflecting a drop of at least 20% from its peak. The STAR 50 index, focusing on major tech and chip companies, has seen an even sharper decline of 40% within a four-month period, erasing around $480 billion in value.

Despite the drop, the STAR 50 trades at an earnings ratio of roughly 100, significantly higher than the Nasdaq 100's ratio of about 30, indicating persistent investor optimism even amid losses.

Challenges for AI Sector

Factors contributing to the AI sector's struggles include weak consumer spending and skepticism about the ability of AI firms to recoup investments. Notably, the robot manufacturer Unitree saw its stock price plummet nearly 50% after a highly successful initial public offering.

Additionally, U.S. regulatory actions have intensified scrutiny on China's tech sector, with the Federal Communications Commission banning imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots and imposing restrictions on Chinese-made components for U.S. data centers.

"The stock market later evolved into a speculative crazy bull. And now we see the bubble bursting," stated Dong Baozhen, a fund manager based in Beijing.
