Service Outages Affect Users of Major AI Platforms
On Thursday morning, users of ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok experienced significant service outages that impeded their ability to use these AI tools for tasks such as writing, research, and coding. By the afternoon, however, services were restored by OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI.
Reports of the outages were widespread, with complaints peaking at around 38,000 for OpenAI's ChatGPT on Downdetector. Users expressed their frustrations on X, highlighting how the downtime affected their productivity. Chemist Simon Maechling tweeted, "Claude, Grok and ChatGPT. How can anyone get any work done?" while AI developer Dan Shipper humorously remarked, "ChatGPT is down, and I am immediately 50 IQ points dumber."
OpenAI began investigating the issues at 10:43 a.m. EST, following a routing error that began at 7:43 a.m. PT. A fix was implemented shortly after, with services returning to normal by 12:55 p.m. EST. Anthropic addressed problems with Claude starting at 8:37 a.m. EST, resolving the first incident within 19 minutes and a subsequent issue by 12:16 p.m. EST. Grok's outage was also acknowledged by xAI, which stated it was working to restore service.
