Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO of Block (CoinDesk)Summary:
  • Cash App is enhancing its cryptocurrency capabilities by integrating with MoonPay, allowing purchases beyond bitcoin and USDC.
  • Customers can now buy tokens like ether, solana, XRP, and USDT, and fund wallets on platforms such as Ledger, BitPay, Trust Wallet, MetaMask, and Uniswap.
  • Previously, Cash App's crypto services were limited to bitcoin, which expanded to include USDC earlier this year.

Cash App is now allowing its users to purchase a wider variety of cryptocurrencies thanks to a new collaboration with MoonPay, marking a significant shift from its previous focus on bitcoin BTC$64,100.72 and USDC.

Eligible users in the U.S. will be able to utilize their Cash App balances to acquire digital assets available through MoonPay, which include ether ETH$1,894.72, solana (SOL), XRP, and the leading stablecoin, USDT.

Additionally, users can fund their wallets on MoonPay with their Cash App balances, including popular options like Ledger, BitPay, Trust Wallet, MetaMask, and Uniswap.

Developed by Jack Dorsey’s fintech company Block (XYZ), Cash App is a key player in the cryptocurrency space, boasting a user base exceeding 50 million.

Historically, Cash App has only permitted bitcoin purchases, but it added support for USDC earlier this year, the second-largest stablecoin by market capitalization.

Despite his reservations about stablecoins, Dorsey acknowledged that Cash App users expressed a desire to use them, stating, “I don’t think it’s wise to go from one gatekeeper to another,” in March.

The partnership with MoonPay illustrates how Cash App can meet customer demands for a broader range of digital currencies without needing to develop the infrastructure in-house.

“While bitcoin remains at the core of our digital asset strategy, we want to give customers choice and flexibility however they choose to pay,” said Morgan Kuntze, Block’s global partnerships lead, in a recent announcement.
