Today, nine prominent institutions in the Bitcoin space announced a collaborative effort to enhance the network's long-term security against potential threats from quantum computing. This initiative is supported by a collective pledge of $15 million over the next three years.

The consortium, named the Bitcoin Security Consortium, consists of major players such as BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Galaxy. Mike Schmidt, the executive director of Brink, a nonprofit that funds Bitcoin open-source developers, will coordinate the group's efforts on a volunteer basis.

The pledged $15 million does not form a central fund; instead, each organization will individually allocate its resources to chosen developers, researchers, or organizations. The consortium emphasizes that it will not advocate for specific modifications to Bitcoin's code or represent the decentralized developer community.

The Link Between Quantum Computing and Bitcoin

Bitcoin's security is currently based on elliptic curve cryptography, a mathematical encryption technique that verifies the authorization of transactions by wallet owners. However, a sufficiently advanced quantum computer could potentially derive a wallet's private key from its public key, thereby compromising the funds.

There is no need for alarm at this point, as the threat is not imminent, but it is becoming increasingly relevant. Many companies are now working on quantum-proof solutions across various sectors including cryptocurrency, cloud storage, and messaging.

The consortium aims to fund research into post-quantum cryptography, which involves new mathematical methods designed to withstand quantum computing threats. Earlier this year, ARK Invest estimated that about 35% of the total Bitcoin supply is stored in addresses that may be vulnerable to future quantum attacks. Furthermore, researchers from Project Eleven have suggested that Q-Day—the day a quantum computer could feasibly break Bitcoin's cryptography—might occur as soon as 2029.

Upgrading Bitcoin to include quantum-resistant signatures is a slow process by design, and it could take years to conduct the necessary research, reach a consensus, and implement changes across wallets, exchanges, and hardware.

Phong Le, CEO of Strategy, which possesses more Bitcoin than any other publicly traded company, stated, "As long-term holders, we have every incentive to see Bitcoin remain secure for generations. Supporting those who work on this issue and contributing to the dialogue around it is a natural way for us to help."

BlackRock, whose iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF manages billions in assets, described the initiative as a means to fill a funding gap for the developers engaged in enhancing Bitcoin's security. Robert Mitchnick, the firm's global head of digital assets, remarked, "Bitcoin Core developers do incredibly important work, and we’re pleased that our firm and the others in this group will now be making significant additional funding available to support Bitcoin’s long-term security needs."

Galaxy's Initiatives

Galaxy, a founding member of the consortium, had previously announced its own Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative just two days earlier, pledging up to $5 million in grants for developers working on post-quantum solutions. Additionally, Galaxy has established a Quantum Advisory Council comprising academics from the University of Calgary and Boston University.

Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy, stated, "There's a gap between the quantum computing world, which is advancing rapidly, and the Bitcoin development world, which is just beginning to seriously engage with post-quantum cryptography. Galaxy's role is to bridge that gap through research that clarifies the threat for investors and policymakers, as well as grants that support the developers tackling the most challenging technical issues."

It remains unclear whether Galaxy's $5 million commitment is part of the consortium's overall $15 million pledge, a detail to monitor as members begin to allocate their contributions.

Mike Novogratz, Galaxy's CEO and founder, characterized the initiative as an institutional responsibility. He stated, "As leaders in the digital assets space, we believe it's important that we help be part of the solution to any potential threat quantum computing poses to Bitcoin. This initiative reflects that commitment, creating practical steps to research, fund, and support the work that keeps Bitcoin secure for the long run."

The consortium plans to regularly publish and update information regarding Bitcoin's security in the forthcoming months.
