TechIsrael’s leading cryptocurrency broker, Bits of Gold, has reported a data breach that has compromised the personal information of approximately 200,000 customers.

While funds and digital assets remain secure, the breach may have exposed names, bank account information, and national ID numbers as part of a larger global cyber incident.

  • Bits of Gold confirmed that hackers accessed sensitive data of around 200,000 customers through a breach at a third-party analytics provider.
  • The compromised information includes names, national ID numbers, emails, phone numbers, IP addresses, bank account details, and public wallet addresses, but not any funds, passwords, private keys, or scanned IDs.
  • This incident is part of a larger trend of data breaches within the crypto industry, following recent breaches at SafePal and Trezor linked to their external partners.

Bits of Gold, a cryptocurrency brokerage based in Tel Aviv, reported that hackers have stolen personal data from about 200,000 of its customers.

The company announced the breach on Sunday, indicating that unauthorized access occurred through a third-party data analytics service, compromising customers’ names, national ID numbers, emails, phone numbers, IP addresses, bank account information, and public wallet addresses.

“Upon discovering the breach, we immediately blocked access and severed the connection to the information sources, ending the unauthorized access,” the company stated.

Bits of Gold assured that no funds, private keys, passwords, CVV codes, or scanned identification documents were compromised. The company also noted that its initial investigation suggests the attack is part of a larger global incident affecting multiple firms at once.

This marks the third reported data breach in the cryptocurrency sector within a week. Following a breach at a third-party vendor, data from nearly 40,000 SafePal users was compromised on Sunday. Additionally, personal information from almost 14,000 Trezor wallet users was exposed on August 13 due to a security breach at its fulfillment partner, ShipMonk.

“Our security team has initiated a thorough investigation of the incident, with help from a specialized cyber incident response company,” Bits of Gold added. “It’s crucial to emphasize that your digital assets and funds are secure and were not part of this incident.”

Founded in 2013, Bits of Gold was the first cryptocurrency company in Israel to obtain a permanent Financial Services Provider license. The company, led by CEO Youval Rouach, serves over 250,000 customers and holds SOC 2 Type 2 certification.

Bits of Gold has advised its customers that it will never request passwords, verification codes, private keys, or fund transfers.
