(CoinDesk Data)SummaryShow- Bitcoin traded around $63,300 in Asian markets, remaining stable for the day but lower for the week as cryptocurrencies remained confined in a narrow range despite a weaker dollar and decreased expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.
- Hyperliquid’s HYPE token stood out, rising over 3% on the day and nearly 9% for the week, while other major tokens such as ether, solana, and XRP experienced modest fluctuations and mostly weekly losses.
- Market analysts attribute the subdued performance in cryptocurrency markets to waning optimism, lower inflows into exchange-traded funds, and uncertainty ahead of the upcoming Federal Reserve minutes and a White House meeting on cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin managed to exceed $64,000 during the Asian morning hours on Monday, marking a 0.5% increase for the day but still down nearly 3% for the week, as the softer dollar and diminishing rate hike expectations did not provide the needed momentum for cryptocurrencies to break out of their recent trading patterns.
The HYPE token from Hyperliquid was the top performer, climbing over 3% to reach $59 and nearly 9% for the week, making it the only major cryptocurrency to show a significant weekly gain. Ether increased by just over 1% to below $1,900 but is down 1% over the past week.
Dogecoin rose nearly 1% to 7 cents, Tron increased slightly to just above 33 cents, while XRP made a marginal gain to $1 but is down 3% over the week. Solana edged up to just above $75, experiencing a decline of almost 2% for the week. BNB saw a slight decrease to just over $604, remaining flat for the week.
The macroeconomic environment has improved, yet it has not influenced the cryptocurrency market significantly. A Bloomberg index measuring the dollar declined by 0.1%, marking its third consecutive drop, while MSCI's emerging-market currency index reached an intraday record, driven by gains in the Taiwanese dollar and Thai baht.
This followed a report on U.S. retail sales which indicated the largest monthly decline in over a year as consumer spending decreased. Traders in swaps currently estimate the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike next month to be around 25%, down from approximately 50% a week prior, and U.S. Treasury yields rose across the board.
Nick Ruck, director of LVRG Research, commented to CoinDesk that the market remains stagnant near $63,000, with diminishing inflows into exchange-traded funds reflecting a lack of confidence following last week's selloff.
“Key catalysts to monitor this week include the release of the FOMC minutes and any news from the anticipated White House crypto meeting, both of which could provide clearer insights into the regulatory and monetary policy outlook,” Ruck noted.
The minutes from the Federal Reserve's meeting held on July 28-29 are scheduled for release on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET, which will reveal how close the committee was to raising rates before last week's data shifted those odds lower.
