Summary

  • Bitcoin's price surged to $65,000 today but quickly lost momentum.
  • While Bitcoin shows gains on the weekly chart, bearish signals continue to dominate.
  • Traders on Myriad predict a challenging outlook, favoring a potential decline rather than a worst-case scenario.

Bitcoin had the opportunity to rally based on macroeconomic factors but failed to capitalize on it.

In July, employers reported a loss of 23,000 jobs, marking the first net decline since the recovery from the pandemic, and significantly missing the anticipated gain of 95,000, as noted by Decrypt this past Friday. This news was interpreted as a signal for the Federal Reserve to refrain from raising interest rates, resulting in a drop in Treasury yields. Such conditions typically encourage riskier investments, but Bitcoin's latest daily performance indicates it struggled to maintain its position above a critical moving average, ultimately retreating below that level.

The performance of the top ten cryptocurrencies by market capitalization reflects a similar trend. Bitcoin registered a modest increase of 1.17% over the past week, ranking among the more stable large-cap cryptocurrencies, trailing only BNB and Solana. However, it still could not reclaim its moving average resistance. The inability to respond positively to favorable macroeconomic conditions suggests underlying market concerns.

As for Bitcoin's current price, it sits at $64,261, representing a 0.92% decline for the day, hovering just below the $64,568 support level. The market remains under a bearish signal known as a death cross—a significant indicator for traders suggesting continued downward pressure.

Since reaching a peak near $80,000 in May, Bitcoin has faced a series of lower highs and lows, leading to a volatile downward trend throughout June and July.

The price structure was established after a decline from $66,921 to $62,216. Following this, Bitcoin briefly bounced off the $62,216 support and attempted to reclaim the 50-day exponential moving average (EMA)—the lower boundary of the EMA cloud—but failed to maintain that upward momentum. This failed recovery resembles typical bull traps, which manage to attract buyers temporarily but do not sustain upward movement. A trendless market can often persist longer than traders anticipate.

The average price over the last 50 days remains below the 200-day moving average, reinforcing the bearish death cross pattern. Exponential moving averages smooth price data over a specific timeframe; when the shorter-term average is below the longer-term one, it signals a downward medium-term trend. Bulls needed a close above the EMA50 to initiate a reversal, but that did not occur.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 50, indicating a neutral market. The RSI operates on a scale from 0 to 100: values above 70 denote overbought conditions, while those below 30 indicate oversold conditions. An RSI of 50 shows that neither buyers nor sellers dominate, which aligns with Bitcoin's recent price fluctuations.

The Squeeze Momentum Indicator has been activated for 22 days, with momentum beginning to increase. Squeezes, where volatility contracts into a narrow range, often resolve in the direction of the prevailing trend, which here is downward. However, this is not guaranteed, and the indicator merely suggests that a significant price movement may be imminent, without indicating the direction.

The Average Directional Index (ADX) is currently at 10.6, indicating weak trend strength. An ADX reading below 20 signifies a choppy market where false breakouts are common. At 10.6, there is no clear trend, although the directional indicators are bearish, aligning with the failed EMA50 attempt rather than opposing it.

Market Predictions

Prediction markets offer a cautious perspective. On Myriad, created by Decrypt’s parent company Dastan, the odds for Bitcoin's next price movement suggest a potential drop to $55,000, with 64.6% likelihood, compared to 35.4% for a rise to $84,000.

The monthly resolution events clarify the outlook further. In the "BTC Highs in August" event, the $65,000 threshold has already resolved as a Yes after Bitcoin touched it earlier this month. However, the likelihood of surpassing $67,500 is only 48%, and the chances decrease significantly for higher targets ($70,000 at 25%, $72,500 at 11%, and $75,000 at 5%).

Market sentiment indicates that the August peak may be largely behind us. The "BTC Lows in August" event is particularly noteworthy: a dip to $60,000 is priced at 35%, but a more significant drop to $55,000 is only at 8%, with $52,500 at 4%. This suggests that the market is more concerned about a decline toward $60,000 than a fall below $55,000.

This aligns with the technical analysis. The death cross and the unsuccessful attempt to reclaim the EMA200 suggest that a rapid return to $80,000 is unlikely, while the support around $62,000 appears to be holding firm.

For a bullish scenario, a daily close above the critical $64,568 level, followed by a move above the EMA500 that capped the last rally, could set the stage for a challenge of the $66,921 swing high. This would require the narrative surrounding jobs and potential rate cuts to support Bitcoin's advance rather than just grazing it.

Conversely, the bearish scenario would entail breaking below the $62,216 swing low, confirming a sequence of lower lows, which could lead to a test of the $60,000 level and the $58,000 support beneath it. The death cross, the negative Squeeze momentum, and the failed EMA50 reclaim all point toward a bearish outlook. At present, the upcoming price movement does not appear to be upward.
