Summary

  • U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have attracted $2.8 billion over an impressive eight-day stretch.
  • Daily inflows have decreased from a high of $606 million on August 20 to $232 million on Wednesday.
  • Tim Sun from HashKey emphasized that the streak’s significance outweighs any single day’s performance, though the decline in inflows indicates diminishing buying interest.

On Thursday, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $79,520, reflecting a 1.1% increase in the last 24 hours after reaching an intraday peak of $80,475, as reported by CoinGecko data. This surge coincided with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs accumulating $2.8 billion across eight consecutive trading days.

BlackRock's IBIT was responsible for $2.02 billion of this total, accounting for 72%, as indicated by Farside Investors data. In contrast, Grayscale's GBTC experienced net outflows of $50.4 million just on Wednesday.

This contrasting performance has been a defining feature of the sector since its inception, with total net inflows reaching $54.7 billion. While IBIT has attracted $63.1 billion, GBTC has seen a net loss of $27.6 billion during the same timeframe.

According to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, gold and Bitcoin funds collectively garnered $7 billion in the past week, marking an unprecedented record for a five-day period. He attributed this surge to a debasement trade that has drawn attention away from AI investments. Balchunas also noted that IBIT's year-to-date inflows have finally turned positive after a prolonged decline.

Stephen Wundke, strategy and revenue director at Algoz Technologies, reported that weekly trading volume exceeded $90 billion, nearly double the average, with Bitcoin contributing just under $40 billion. He noted that nearly $2 billion in weekly ETF inflows matched the total for the previous month, suggesting that if August maintains this momentum, it could be the strongest month since October 2025.

Implications of the Streak

Tim Sun, a senior researcher at HashKey, cautioned against overinterpreting daily inflow data. He explained to Decrypt that tracking inflows against prices since 2024 reveals a positive long-term correlation, with a coefficient near 0.5. This signifies a rough increase of 0.4% in Bitcoin's price for every $100 million in net inflows.

“Using single-day ETF flows to predict the following day's Bitcoin price has very limited effectiveness,” Sun stated, describing inflows as indicators that confirm existing trends rather than predict future movements.

Notably, streaks of sustained inflows beyond five consecutive days indicate a strong demand for spot Bitcoin, according to Sun. The current streak follows a significant correction within the $60,000 to $70,000 price range. "Capital from ETF channels suggests a much greater acceptance of the current price level, reinforcing market consensus that a temporary bottom is forming," he added.

The daily figures support his caution regarding momentum. Inflows peaked at $606.3 million on August 20 and haven't surpassed $340 million in subsequent sessions, with Wednesday’s inflow of $232.2 million marking the lowest. New investments are still being made, but the strength of buying seems to be waning, fitting a market that has surpassed $80,000 and is experiencing both profit-taking and trapped positions. Sun identified the resistance area near $85,000.

Sun’s next challenge is to see if prices can stabilize or dip slightly while inflows persist, which would indicate that new capital is absorbing the selling pressure. The recent drop below $80,000 provides an initial indication, although the inflow figures for the day are still pending. Wundke set a lower benchmark, asserting that maintaining a price above $72,000 would "instill confidence in investors" that any pullbacks represent buying opportunities.
