The team behind the L2 network Base has announced the Beryl update plan. The activation on the mainnet is scheduled for June 25.
The testnet is already live.
The key innovation will be the B20 standard. Unlike traditional smart contracts, its logic is embedded directly into the node's code. This will enable the creation of tokens that operate faster and at a lower cost.
B20 is fully compatible with the ERC-20 format, ensuring that new assets will be supported by existing wallets and exchanges. Initially, developers will be provided with two templates: one for stablecoins and another for regular assets.
In the future, this standard will allow transaction fees to be paid in the tokens themselves (without using ETH) and will double the network's throughput.
The update will also reduce the time required to withdraw assets from Base to Ethereum. Instead of seven days, the process will take five. This improvement is made possible by the transition to a Multiproofs system.
The technical aspects of the upgrade include the implementation of Reth V2. The new version will reduce the storage load on nodes and speed up block processing.
The next major update, called Cobalt, is scheduled for September, which is expected to introduce native account abstraction.
As a reminder, in May, Base announced the integration of ZK proofs from Succinct Labs to enhance security and speed up transaction finalization.
