AstraZeneca Partners with Insitro for AI Drug Discovery Worth Up to $1.5 Billion

AstraZeneca has entered a significant partnership with the American biotechnology company insitro to leverage artificial intelligence in the search for new medicines.

Today, insitro announced a strategic collaboration with @AstraZeneca for the AI-enabled discovery of novel therapeutics for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and cardiomyopathies. insitro will receive $40 million upfront and is eligible for up to approximately $1.46 billion in potential, discovery, development and commercial milestones, plus tiered royalties.

The collaboration aims to address serious liver and heart diseases, with the total deal value potentially reaching $1.5 billion.

Under the terms, insitro will receive an initial payment of $40 million and has the opportunity to earn around $1.46 billion through milestone payments tied to research, clinical, and commercial achievements, along with tiered royalties based on future sales of the drugs. These royalties, however, are contingent on successful development outcomes.

AI to Identify Biological Causes of Diseases

The partnership focuses on two main areas: metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a severe liver condition linked to fat accumulation and inflammation, and cardiomyopathies, a group of heart muscle diseases.

Developing effective treatments for these conditions is challenging due to the varying biological mechanisms underlying each diagnosis. Therefore, the goal of the collaboration is to not only identify candidate molecules but also to pinpoint the biological processes that lead to these diseases.

Insitro will utilize its Virtual Human platform, which integrates human data, cellular models, and machine learning, to uncover causal relationships in disease biology and identify potential drug targets.

Insitro will explore AstraZeneca's selected targets and advance them from discovery to drug candidate stages, while AstraZeneca will manage clinical development, regulatory processes, and commercialization of potential therapies.

Pharmaceutical Companies Expanding AI Applications

AstraZeneca views the identification of suitable biological targets as one of the most challenging aspects of research and development. Sharon Barr, Executive Vice President and Head of BioPharmaceuticals R&D, emphasized that uncovering new biological connections early in the process can provide a competitive advantage.

The integration of AI tools with expert scientific work is expected to reduce the number of molecules needing laboratory testing, decrease uncertainty, and accelerate the search for promising drugs.

This agreement marks another major partnership for insitro within the pharmaceutical industry, as the company is also collaborating with Bristol Myers Squibb on potential treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and with Eli Lilly to develop machine learning models for predicting small molecule properties in the body.

In July, Anthropic launched the Claude Science platform for researchers and announced plans to develop therapies for advanced diseases, becoming the first AI tool provider to express intentions to create drugs independently.
