Apple is testing a standalone app for its voice assistant Siri along with a new feature called Ask Siri, which will function across the company's ecosystem, reported Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, citing sources.
The iPhone developer is modernizing its digital assistant as part of a broader overhaul in artificial intelligence. The new Siri will feature a fresh look and functionality akin to a chatbot.
After struggling to achieve significant success with Apple Intelligence, the company is reworking its AI platform around a new version of the voice assistant. The goal is to transform the technology from a standard assistant into a systemic AI agent with deep integration across all applications.
The updated Siri, codenamed Campo, is designed for more efficient management of iPhone and Mac functions, utilizing personal data such as messages, notes, and emails.
The assistant will be able to perform tasks within applications, access news content, and search for information online.
The most notable change will be its ability to interact with users in a conversational, chat-like format using text or voice.
Standalone App
As part of the transition to this new model, Apple is testing a standalone Siri app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, expected to launch later in 2026. This move will position it as a competitor to other AI tools and provide users with a central hub for accessing their interaction history.
The main interface will display previous dialogues in a list or grid format with text previews. Users will be able to pin favorite chats, save old conversations, search through history, and start new dialogues with a dedicated button.
The conversation screen will resemble a chat in the Messages app. The company will add a toggle between voice and text modes and allow users to upload attachments.
New Interface and Search
Users will be able to summon Siri using the power button or a voice command. At the same time, Apple is testing a revamped interface that will replace the glowing edges introduced in iOS 18.
One of the options being tested involves placing Siri at the top of the screen within Dynamic Island.
The updated Siri will provide more detailed responses from the internet and generate news summaries using Apple News.
OS Integration
Apple is testing deeper integration of the assistant into its operating systems. The Ask Siri feature will appear in the built-in app menu, allowing users to send selected content to a new dialogue with the assistant.
Additionally, a Write with Siri button is being developed to open a tool menu for generating and editing text. This tool already exists but is difficult to locate in the current version of iOS.
Many of the new solutions are based on updated internal models from Apple Foundation Model and Google Gemini technologies.
In February, reports revealed Apple's plans to release an AI pendant and headphones with cameras.
