These challenges raised concerns about whether Apple was falling behind competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in the race to develop AI assistants.
The introduction of the new Siri occurs as Tim Cook prepares to deliver his last keynote as Apple's CEO before John Ternus takes over on September 1.
“Personally, some of my most significant moments as CEO have been events like this, where I share powerful new tools with all of you and witness what you create with them,” Cook stated. “It has constantly reminded me that imagination is limitless.”
Siri AI Features
Monday's announcement, which followed leaks about iOS 27 updates in May, positions Siri AI as a key component of Apple Intelligence, the company's AI platform that integrates across its range of devices and services.
According to Apple, the redesigned assistant can utilize a user's personal context, comprehend on-screen content, search through messages, emails, photos, and files, and respond to inquiries using online information.
In demonstrations, Apple showcased the assistant drafting emails, editing and sharing photos, creating reminders, adding notes, and transferring information between applications. Users can also engage in follow-up questions and maintain conversations in a chatbot-like format, while Siri AI can execute actions across applications through enhanced system-wide integrations.
The rollout includes a dedicated Siri app that maintains conversation history and syncs it across devices via iCloud, enabling users to start a conversation on a Mac and continue it on an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Vision Pro.
Apple revealed that Siri AI operates on a new Apple Intelligence architecture that merges on-device AI models with Private Cloud Compute, which manages more complex requests on Apple-controlled servers.
This announcement comes as Apple increasingly collaborates with external AI developers, incorporating tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and an agreement earlier this year to integrate Google's Gemini into its AI solutions. Apple emphasized that data processed through Private Cloud Compute is not stored or accessible to the company and can be independently verified by external security experts.
Safari and OS Enhancements
The Siri rollout is part of a broader expansion of Apple Intelligence across its other products, including Safari. The web browser will now utilize AI to categorize browser tabs by topic, monitor webpages for changes like price drops or product restocks through a feature called Notify Me, and generate extensions based on natural language descriptions. The Passwords app can also navigate websites and improve weak passwords automatically.
Apple also introduced updates to Photos and image generation features, including editing tools that can reframe images, extend them beyond their original limits, and eliminate unwanted objects. A new Image Playground capable of generating photorealistic images was also unveiled, with edited and generated images featuring SynthID watermarks to denote them as AI-generated or modified.
Additional Apple Intelligence functionalities will be available in Messages, Mail, Calendar, Phone, Shortcuts, and Home. Messages may suggest actions like creating reminders from chats, Mail can perform tasks via third-party applications, and Calendar can generate events from natural language descriptions. The Home app will receive video summaries and search capabilities for security footage, while Shortcuts can create automations from simple language instructions.
Apple is also enhancing Siri's visual capabilities with a new mode for iPhones that can analyze camera visuals and respond to inquiries about people, places, objects, and text. Visual Intelligence will be extended to iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro, allowing users to search images, screenshots, documents, and on-screen content, as well as perform tasks like identifying food, splitting bills, and interacting with displayed information on their devices.

Siri AI is available for developer testing starting Monday via Apple's Developer Program on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27, with watchOS 27 support to follow in a future beta. Apple announced that the assistant will enter beta later this year in English on supported devices, although it will not be available at launch on iPhone and iPad in the European Union and will remain inaccessible in China as the company navigates regulatory hurdles.
