- Fable 5 will be available worldwide starting July 1, while Mythos 5 will only be accessible to approved U.S. organizations after a governmental review.
- This situation arose from a cybersecurity discovery by Amazon, which revealed a way to bypass Fable 5's safeguards, prompting a cooperative effort between Anthropic and U.S. agencies regarding model safety and standards.
Anthropic has announced the restoration of its advanced AI models following the U.S. government's decision to remove export restrictions that had previously necessitated their withdrawal.
The controls affecting Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 were lifted on June 30, enabling Fable 5 to return globally on July 1. In contrast, Mythos 5, which is based on the same technology but has fewer restrictions, will be reintroduced only to select U.S. organizations after receiving government clearance on June 26.
The suspension originated on June 12, when the government imposed export controls designed to restrict access to the technology for certain foreign nationals. Due to the immediate effect of the order and Anthropic's inability to confirm users' nationalities in real-time, it opted to halt access for all users to avoid potential violations.
This action was triggered by a cybersecurity issue reported by Amazon researchers, who discovered a method to exploit Fable 5's defenses, allowing the model to recognize software vulnerabilities and even generate exploit code.
Although Anthropic is a privately held company, its valuation has been speculated upon through a pre-IPO perpetual futures contract on the onchain platform Hyperliquid. This contract experienced a decline of approximately 3.7% when access was suspended in June, raising concerns about the implications for its forthcoming public listing.
In light of these events, Anthropic has indicated a commitment to enhancing its collaboration with U.S. government entities. This includes providing selected agencies with early access to advanced models and their protective measures prior to public availability, sharing threat intelligence, and striving for a unified security standard among AI developers.
Additionally, Anthropic is in the process of developing a framework alongside Amazon, Microsoft, and Google to evaluate the risk level associated with jailbreak incidents. These efforts are in line with a June 2 executive order on AI security, indicating a closer relationship between cutting-edge AI advancements and governmental oversight, which is likely to attract both support for responsible practices and scrutiny regarding governmental influence over model deployment.
