Summary

  • A recent leak reveals that Claude Code version 2.1.190 suggests Fable 5 will be included in weekly subscription limits instead of being an extra purchase.
  • These strings, not found in the public GitHub changelog, exist within the binary.
  • This development coincides with an apparent improvement in Anthropic's relationship with the Trump administration.

Fable 5 could be making a comeback, potentially without any additional costs.

A leaker known as “synthwavedd” on X revealed on Tuesday that Claude Code version 2.1.190 includes strings that hint at Fable 5's return, integrated into subscription plans. The notable phrase: "You've used your Fable 5 usage for this week."

🚨 BREAKING: Claude Code v2.1.190 introduces several string changes that hint at preparations for a Fable 5 return, with it being permanently included in subscriptions with weekly usage.

Initially, Fable 5 was available to subscribers for a limited free period, but was intended to transition to separate usage credits. However, the Trump administration intervened shortly after its launch, claiming it posed a national security risk if exploited.

The latest string indicates a shift away from that model, suggesting a weekly allocation akin to a data plan that resets every week instead of requiring an individual top-up.

The leaker also pointed out that the phrase "purchased separately from your plan" seems to have been omitted from the user interface, indicating a potential restructuring of the pricing model.

Verification of the Leaked String

Decrypt confirmed the authenticity of the strings. The team downloaded the macOS Apple Silicon Claude Code package from npm using npm pack @anthropic-ai/claude-code-darwin-arm64@2.1.190, extracted the archive, and ran strings -a on the bundled package/claude executable. The new Fable 5 text was present: "You've used your included Fable 5 usage for this week. Continuing on Fable 5 uses usage credits."

However, this does not guarantee that Fable 5 will return imminently. Such code modifications are common during product development—companies often draft UI text for features long before their release. Nonetheless, changes in a production binary indicate active planning.

Moreover, some users have observed that Amazon Bedrock still lists

Fable 5 just appeared in the Amazon Bedrock model catalog.

The page is live.

The model is listed as sold by Anthropic.

Shifts in Anthropic's Political Landscape

Fable 5, the first publicly available model from Anthropic’s Mythos series, was removed on June 12 after the Trump administration issued an emergency directive due to a jailbreak vulnerability. Anthropic complied but contested the seriousness of the issue, arguing that any model on the market could exhibit similar vulnerabilities without needing a bypass.

The aftermath was a contentious public standoff. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei found himself in an awkward position at the G7 summit, sitting across from Trump, with OpenAI’s Sam Altman beside the president and Amodei next to French President Emmanuel Macron.

Anthropic has not been favored by Trump, particularly after the company refused to permit the Pentagon to use its AI for certain military applications, leading to its classification as a supply-chain risk. Trump has also labeled Anthropic as "woke," a term that typically does not resonate well with him.

However, recent developments indicate a potential thaw in relations. According to Wired, Anthropic has replaced Dario Amodei with co-founder Tom Brown as its liaison with the White House regarding Fable 5. The administration has reportedly responded positively to Brown’s leadership.

Since mid-June, Brown has participated in discussions with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross. Current negotiations focus on establishing a shared framework to assess AI jailbreak incidents—essentially, mutually agreed criteria for determining when a model vulnerability constitutes a national security threat.

Trump stated last week that he no longer perceives Anthropic as a national security risk, reversing his earlier stance from mid-June. Anthropic expressed gratitude for the administration's "ongoing partnership" in a carefully crafted statement. Although the model remains offline, the political climate appears to have improved significantly.

If the recent changes in Claude Code are any indication, Anthropic is working towards providing subscribers with the Fable 5 access they anticipated from the beginning: a weekly allocation included in their plan instead of requiring separate credits.

The model’s status page at status.claude.com still reflects the June 13 suspension as ongoing, with no date for reinstatement provided.
