Blackstone-backed data center operator AirTrunk plans to invest over ₹3 trillion ($30 billion) in India by 2030, expanding its capacity for AI computing by 5 GW.

The initiative will span several states and union territories. After entering the market through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra in April 2026, AirTrunk secured a project portfolio of 600 MW in Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

Earlier this week, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a letter of intent regarding land allocation in the Raigad Pen Growth Center. Here, AirTrunk aims to build a 3 GW data center and invest around ₹2 trillion (approximately $21 billion). The company did not clarify whether this project will be part of the planned 5 GW or if additional sites will be developed in other regions.

This announcement followed a meeting between AirTrunk CEO Robin Hood and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hood also held discussions with federal officials and ministers in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. According to the company, they discussed accelerating investments in cloud and AI infrastructure, including access to electricity, renewable energy, sustainable water supply, workforce training, and expediting approvals.

Hood stated, "Capital is mobile, and India is creating conditions for its growth." He noted that AirTrunk sees a combination of government initiatives in AI, a strong technical foundation, and access to renewable energy in the country.

It is worth mentioning that in February, Indian authorities offered foreign cloud service providers zero taxes until 2047 on services sold outside the country, with the condition that workloads must be executed from Indian data centers.
