The Ethereum Layer 2 network Abstract will cease operations on December 15, 2026. This announcement was made by the project developers and its parent company, Igloo Inc., which is also known for the NFT collection Pudgy Penguins.

The primary reason for the shutdown is the unviability of a business model focused solely on mass users. Representatives from Abstract noted that the network struggled with low liquidity, underdeveloped DeFi sector, and a lack of institutional interest.
Igloo Inc. CEO Luca Netz mentioned that the company spent tens of millions of dollars over two years, yet the project never achieved product-market fit. The network is shutting down despite having a user base of 400,000, 144 launched applications, and partnerships with global brands such as Disney and Red Bull Racing.
Users are required to withdraw their funds by December 15, 2026, via the Migration Hub platform or the official bridge. After this date, access to remaining assets will be terminated. The developers also promised to assist third-party teams in migrating applications to other networks.
It is worth noting that on September 29, BAL holders approved a phased shutdown plan for Balancer. Additionally, three other crypto projects — Harmony, Router Protocol, and Orionx — announced their closures in the same month.
